Create a New Image

You can create a new image in several ways:

• From the Menu Bar: Choose File > New (⌘N) to create a blank image. A dialog will appear where you can set the following options:

  • Preset / Width / Height: Choose a preset size or enter custom dimensions (the dialog remembers the size you last used; before that it defaults to your screen's pixel dimensions). Available units include pixels, inches, cm, mm, and feet.
    • From Clipboard: Uses the dimensions of the image currently in your clipboard.
    • Full Screen: Uses the dimensions of your Mac's display.
    • Full Screen Viewport: Uses the display dimensions, excluding the menu bar and Dock.
    • Common screen sizes (from 640 × 480 up to 5K) and ISO paper sizes (A0–A6) are listed as presets.
    • My Favorites: Sizes you have saved appear in this section of the preset menu. Click the favorites button next to the size fields to add the current size and resolution, and choose Manage Favorites… at the bottom of the menu to remove saved entries.
  • Resolution: Pre-filled with a value optimized for your display. Choose pixels per inch or pixels per centimeter from the pop-up. It is recommended to keep the default unless you need a specific resolution for printing.
  • Image Background Color: Set the initial background color. Choose the transparent color if you do not want a solid background. Your choice is remembered for the next new document.

  Tips

  You can change these settings at any time after creating the image:

  • To change the size or resolution, choose Image > Resize Canvas….
  • To change the background color, click the background color button in the Bottom Bar.

• From Clipboard: Choose File > New from Clipboard to create a new document using an image currently copied to your clipboard.

• From the Open Panel: Click Create New or New from Clipboard in the Open Panel when the app launches.

Once created, a new document window will open, ready for you to draw, sketch, or edit.
